Students At Area High School Dealing With Sexting Scandal
PLYMOUTH-MEETING, Pa. (CBS) -- An assembly today at Plymouth-Whitemarsh High School as the Colonial School District is the latest to be hit by an investigation into reports of students sharing illicit photos of classmates.
This is part of an on-going effort by the Montgomery County DA's office to educate teens. They were already scheduled to visit Plymouth Whitemarsh High School when school officials were alerted to a Dropbox account last month.
Tenth grader Kaleigh Branagh says word of that investigation -- and this assembly -- have been eye-opening.
"I wasn't aware the severity of the laws, I knew there were some consequences, but I didn't know how serious they were before this."
Chief of the Juvenile Division for the Montgomery county DA's office, Sharon Giamporcaro says it's important students learn sharing or viewing these images could affect the rest of their lives.
"They're chararacteristically impulsive, and they make these decisions thinking, 'Well, it's probably not a law, I'm probably not breaking it.' So this is really important education."
This particular investigation is ongoing, it started on November 18th after school officials were alerted by a parent. Giamporcaro says not a week goes by that the DA's office doesn't get a call regarding sexting, not all rise to the level of charges, but an idea of how prevalent this is.
