Local Pakistani American Community Reacts To Shooting In San Bernardino

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Pakistani American community in our area is reacting the California mass shooting.

They and other Muslim community groups have received little backlash and some believe its the result of a proactive program launched earlier this year.

"We strongly condemn these kinds of incidents."

Attorney Rana Taj leads the Pakistani American Society of the Delaware Valley. He says their community is close-knit, well educated and peaceful. And they are taking a stand against the violence.

"There is no room in a modern society for such nonsense."

He says the community has not gotten backlash or hate calls like other Muslim groups.

The local Council for American Islamic Relations also is reporting fewer hate calls than in past despite the violence. Some attribute the development to the 'Dare to Understand' campaign a partnership between dozens of and groups lead by the Interfaith Center of Philadelphia.

The goal- promote tolerance and love not hate.

Executive director Abby Stamelman Hocky says, "We are proud of Philadelphia living into its reputation as the City of Brotherly Love."

The campaign includes a billboard, interfaith walks and events.
