Pennsylvania Senate Sends House Legislation To Regulate Ride-Sharing Services
HARRISBURG, Pa. (CBS) -- The state Senate has taken a step toward regulating ride-sharing services that have become popular in Philadelphia and the rest of the state.
As state regulators consider a $50-million fine against Uber for operating without approval in Pennsylvania, the state Senate has passed a bill that would regulate ride-sharing services.
Philadelphia Democrat Larry Farnese says he's not happy about a lot of things going on with those companies, including operating without approval, and the process that led up to the Senate vote on the bill, but he voted for the measure anyway.
"I should vote for this bill because number one, my constituents want it," Farnese says. "People in Pennsylvania want it. People in Philadelphia want it. I do think it's a good bill that could become a lot better."
Farnese says he hopes that as the ride-sharing industry grows, it will show more willingness to engage with communities.
"I hope that as the industry begins to flourish here in Pennsylvania, and begins to work with us -- and that this industry begins to grow in Pennsylvania and across the country, that it will see a more willingness on their part to be engaged with us," he says.
The bill now goes to the state House for consideration.
