Museums A Popular Family Alternative To Shopping The Day After Thanksgiving

By Jim Melwert

DOYLESTOWN, Pa., (CBS) -- Looking for an alternative to crowded shopping malls and aggressive shoppers? How about a museum.

Black Friday is a big day for area museums, Visit Bucks County says they see museum attendance double or even triple the day after Thanksgiving.

Gayle Shupack with the Mercer Museum in Doylestown, says they find many families are looking for alternatives to shopping, a way to spend time together the day after the holiday.

"You can't exactly talk in a movie theater, but you can be social with your friends and family at a museum," said Shupack.

She says they expect more than 1,000 people to visit on Friday, with a LEGO castle adventure exhibit, a century of trees and toys.

"And we'll have a food historian who will explain the history of gingerbread as it evolved from a mixture of ginger and bread crumbs to its present day form," said Shupack.
