Drexel Looks For A Jump Start Out In Alaska

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Drexel Dragons will look to shake off a tough start to the season this week as they take part in the Great Alaska Shootout. The Dragons will open play Thanksgiving night as they take on UNC-Asheville in Anchorage.

Drexel has gotten off to an 0-3 start, losing to St. Joseph's, High Point and, most recently, Monmouth. Head coach Bruiser Flint talks about why his team has been slow out of the gate here in the early going.

"A lot of inconsistency within the games," Flint tells KYW Newsradio. "I think we've had opportunities to win all three that we've been in. But we've just imploded at times and played some really bad stretches and we've played teams that are good enough and they take advantage of that. So we've got to get some consistency within the games and hopefully we can turn it around."

Listen to the entire interview with Drexel head coach Bruiser Flint:

Despite the early struggles, Flint says they are doing some good things.

"I actually think that we've competed and we've played hard," Flint says. "I think I've gotten some contributions from some guys, Terrell Allen, my freshman point guard, has been pretty good. (Sophomore guard) Rashaan London has scored the ball for us a little bit. We've actually scored the ball, that's something that we usually don't do. I don't know how great we've been on defense, that hasn't been one of our better things"

Allen leads the team with 13 assists and 8 steals. He is third on the team in scoring, averaging 12.7 points a game. London is second in scoring, pouring in 14 points per contest. The Dragons are paced at the offensive end by senior guard Tavon Allen who averages 17 points a contest.

Drexel is averaging nearly 74 points a game this season. Last season, they scored a shade under 60 a night. But the Dragons are also allowing nearly 80 points a game here in the early going, which is about 15 more than they allowed per game a season ago.

UNC Asheville is off to a 1-3 start. Last time out on Saturday they lost on the road to Texas A&M.

"They are a team that scores the ball and we've got to play better defensively," Flint says. "They're real scrappy. Not real big, but they are a team that's pretty efficient, offensively. We have a little bit of a height advantage so we can take advantage of that hopefully."

This is the first of three games in three days the Dragons will play in Alaska.

Drexel and UNC Asheville will tip off at midnight local time on Thanksgiving night.
