Philadelphia May Condemn Property For Delaware Riverfront Trail

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The city of Philadelphia may try to condemn a piece of property along the Delaware River for part of a planned 3.3 mile bicycle and walking trail.

The city planning commission voted Tuesday to try to acquire the land.

Deputy Mayor Alan Greenberger says efforts to buy the land from the Henry J. Stewart Trust have failed, so the city may move to condemn the land.

The strip in question is behind the Henry Stewart Co. wire rope business and runs between Penn Treaty Park and SugarHouse Casino.

City Council would also have to approve the acquisition.

The landowner hasn't commented on the plans.
