High School Top 10: Upper Dublin Looks Like The Team To Beat In District 1
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — The PIAA, Catholic League and Public League playoffs are beginning this week. It looks as if the teams that won in the past, St. Joe's Prep, Archbishop Wood, Imhotep Charter are likely to win again in the Catholic League and Public League, respectively.
But there is a team in the PIAA Class AAAA that has been highly successful, but largely unnoticed this year, and that's undefeated Upper Dublin.
In past years, the Cardinals have gradually risen into becoming one of the best teams in District 1. Coach Bret Stover threw a core group of sophomores on the field two years that took their share of bumps and bruises and have matured.
This is the year Stover had been aiming for the last two years. The Cardinals are a combined 30-4 over the last two years, the best run in school history. They reached the PIAA District 1 Class AAAA semifinals last year, losing to eventual District 1 champion Pennsbury, 25-14.
Headlining the returning players is 6-foot-4, 200-pound senior quarterback Ryan Stover, the son of Bret, who is one of the top quarterbacks in the area. Senior inside linebackers Jack Rapine and Henry Winebrake are a pair of three-year starters who know the system and want to see the time commitment translate into a 10-0 finish this year. A District 1 Class AAAA championship is very possible—if the Cardinals can remain healthy.
Upper Dublin has some tough teams to go through. No. 1 seed Downingtown East, a dual-threat Cary Angeline, who's committed to USC, poses a serious obstacle toward a district title, as does No. 2 Downingtown West and traditional powerhouse No. 9 North Penn, a darkhorse that always merits strong consideration.
