Science Teachers Unite This Week In Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- You might call it "geek central."

Science teachers from across the region are gathering in Philadelphia this week.

3,000 members of the National Science Teachers Association are meeting Thursday through Saturday at the Convention Center, with sessions on topics including "Microgravity in the Classroom" and "Forensic Dissection."

Association Executive Director David Evans says in the world of science teaching, there's a move now to mesh the aspects of STEM education.

"We're seeing a much greater emphasis on STEM as an integrated kind of subject -- integrating science and engineering, integrating the technology along with it and bringing the math along as an integral part," Evans explained.

Evans said there will be plenty of hands-on time for teachers to learn new techniques they can bring back to their classes.
