Stanford says the picture, which went viral on social media, sends the wrong message about the department’s dedication to serve the community. “This paints everyone with that broad brush and putting that message out there that we’re not doing our jobs,” he said.

Finally, Stanford says the two officers put themselves at risk if the person who snapped the picture, without their realizing it, had been someone planning to harm them.

“It’s just very dangerous to have officers not paying attention to what’s going on around them and for someone to be able to take a photo of these officers and they aren’t aware of it. They don’t wake up. Its just a dangerous situation.”
