Gunfire Leads To Standoff At Bensalem Motel; 1 Dead

TREVOSE, Pa. (CBS) – Bensalem police say one person is dead after shots were fired at a motel Saturday afternoon, leading to a standoff.

This began just before 3 p.m. at the Knights Inn on the 2700 block of Lincoln Highway in Bensalem, Bucks County.

Police say officers tried to take a person who was inside a room at the motel into custody for a parole violation.

Three total people were in the room and one of them opened fire on police when they tried to enter.

The officers were not struck and did not return fire, police say. A barricade situation followed for several hours.

SWAT units got involved and eventually gained access to the room.

Police say two people were taken into custody to end the standoff, and the third person was found dead with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. He was identified as 34-year-old Lloyd Wayne Franklin.

The other two taken into custody have been identified as James Miller and Jennifer Lanning.

Franklin and Lanning had active arrest warrants out of North Carolina for homicide, authorities say. Police say they were actually serving a warrant for Miller, however, which is what brought them to the motel. They say he is a "hitchhiker" who was picked up along the way.

Police say Lanning surrendered first, then Miller.

An investigation is ongoing.
