What's Cooking on 1060: "Month of 1,000 Pies"

By Hadas Kuznits

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- November is the "month of 1,000 pies" at Red Owl Tavern.

Red Owl Tavern general manager Natalie Pineda says this month they're partnering with Philabundance to help people in need.

"For every pie that we sell, we want to donate a pie," Pineda says. "Our goal is to accomplish 1,000 pies for the month."

She says the holiday season is a time to be thankful.

"And being a restaurant," Pineda says, "we have that ability to branch out and be able to give back."

She says you never know what people are going through.

"I think that everybody can fall on hard times," Pineda says. "I used to live in South Philadelphia and there is a huge Philabundance truck that parks underneath the overpass and I drive by it all the time and I would see all types of families."

In fact, Pineda says there was a time she herself lived through a rough patch.

"(I was) a single mom at the time," she says, "and I had to move out and I had two kids, and it was tough."

Pineda has since remarried and is expecting her third child, but....

"It made me reflect that in an instant, your life can change," she says.

And she says you can help by indulging in pie.

"We're doing a pumpkin pie and an apple pie," Pineda says. "People can come 7 days a week and order our pies, either through our counter, we'll have some available, or people can pre-order them if they wanted a few more, especially around the holidays."

Pies cost $12 or two for $20.

"We're hoping that our pies will bring a little sweetness to people's holidays," Pineda says.
