Pottstown's First-Ever Student And School Board Member

POTTSTOWN, Pa. (CBS) --   When he takes his seat in December, 18-year-old Emmanuel Wilkerson will become the first simultaneous student and school board member in Pottstown District History.

"Now it's time to get to work and I want to get to work," Wilkerson said. "I'll work with our best people, our Superintendent, everything and we're going to get to work now."

Tuesday, the high-schooler finished third among six candidates, set to be certified to the nine-member board. When he knew he was going to run, he wasn't old enough to be elected.

"I didn't even register," he said. "I registered the week of my birthday, two weeks before the primary in May and then I ran a write in campaign."

Wilkerson was already class president, student government president and a special non-voting student board member.

Now, he'll be the only school board member in Pottstown, not yet legally old enough to drink.

"I want to see each student, including me, have the same opportunities as other schools that have bigger budgets or have more stuff handed to them," He said. "I would like to be a public servant and serve my people and be truthful."
