Three Pa. Supreme Court Justices To Be Elected Today In Historic Race

By Tony Romeo

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Voters in Pennsylvania have an unprecedented choice today -- they will vote for candidates vying for three open seats on the state's seven-member Supreme Court.

The outcome of today's election could determine which party has the majority on the state Supreme Court for years to come. Muhlenberg College political analyst Chris Borick says there's a lot stake for Democratic Governor Tom Wolf and Republican legislative leaders.

"The court is asked regularly to weigh in on the constitutionality of the laws and actions of the executive and the legislature," says Borick. "And so for Wolf and the Republican-controlled legislature, the outcome of this election is very important."

On the ballot Pennsylvania voters will find three Democrats., Philadelphia Judge Kevin Dougherty and Superior Court Judges Christine Donohue and David Wecht.

There are three Republicans: Superior Court Judge Judy Olson, Commonwealth Court Judge Anne Covey, and Adams County Judge Mike George.

Philadelphia Judge Paul Panepinto is also running as an independent.
