Teen Bicyclist Shot And Killed After Gunmen Open Fire In Strawberry Mansion

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A teenage boy is dead after more than a dozen shots were fired at him and another teen today Sunday in the Strawberry Mansion section of Philadelphia.

It happened around 4:30 p.m. Sunday in the 2200 block of Sedgley Avenue.

Police say a 16-year-old boy and a 15-year-old boy were riding their bikes there when two men in a sedan pulled up and got out of their car.

"Complaints at that time, believing something bad was about to happen, turned around on their bikes," says Police Captain Nicholas Brown. "At that time, they noticed two males who began shooting at them. One complainant was shot in the center of his back. The other complainant fled the area."

Patrol officers nearby heard the commotion and responded to the neighborhood and found the 16-year-old lying in the street. He was rushed to Temple University Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The 15-year-old who was not hit by the gunfire and is cooperating with police.

Police say the gunmen fired 17 shots before driving off.

Although there is no a clear motive, Brown says it's possible there was some incident or exchange involving the bicyclists and the two gunmen before the shooting.
