West Chester Looks To Build Off Huge Win Over Bloomsburg

By Matt Leon

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Division II West Chester Golden Rams started the 2015 season 0-2, but that seems like a really long time ago now.

Since that start, West Chester has won five of six games and their last win was their most impressive. This past Saturday, the Golden Rams knocked off an outstanding Bloomsburg team for Homecoming, 33-22.

"A lot of positives," West Chester head coach Bill Zwaan tells KYW Newsradio. "Defense played tremendous the whole game. (Senior defensive lineman) Andrew Cohen just had a tremendous game. Give credit to Bloom, they're a good football team, they never quit. They got the lead late and then our guys stepped up and took the lead back from them. I thought (sophomore) Pat Moriarty, our quarterback, did a really nice job on our two-minute drill to get the ball in the end zone. (Senior tight end) Timmy Brown made a couple big plays for us. Then, of course, (sophomore defensive back) Shaquil James with an interception return for a touchdown of 92 yards to seal the game (with 19 seconds left). Just really big plays all over the place and it really is a great win for a team that needed that exact type of win."

The victory improved West Chester to 5-3 overall and they are now in a three-way tie for first place in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East with a 4-1 mark.

The Golden Rams will now focus on Saturday's game against a Cheyney University team that is 0-8 and has struggled to be competitive. Zwaan says a big focus leading up to this game is to continue to get better as a team.

"We're alot like that almost every single week," Zwaan says. "Obviously, there are things we've got to do against a particular opponent, so we make adjustments and game plan for that. But the reality is if we believe in ourselves and we have a shot to play in the playoffs, then our goals are down the road, and the only way you have a chance to win in the playoffs is if you are getting better each week. So we're always putting pressure on our kids to pay attention in practice, get better in practice, keep the momentum going that way, so when the time comes, we'll be the team we need to be. So that's been our theme this week again, just make sure we're getting better every day in practice, so that we're better on Saturday than we were last Saturday and then that will make us better the following week."

Saturday's game will kickoff at Cheyney at noon.
