3 On Your Side: Delaware Gets New Site To Search For Unclaimed Funds
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- How many times have you wished that you had some extra money? Well you may be owed some cash, and not even know it! 3 On Your Side Consumer Reporter Jim Donovan is here to talk about one of his favorite things, unclaimed cash.
Not everyone can be as lucky as a lottery winner. But you could be entitled to cash and not even know it. In Delaware alone $1.6 billion dollars is waiting to be claimed! Today the state launched a new website so people can search for unclaimed cash and get back what's theirs.
3 On Your Side has been on the forefront of the issue for years, helping people get their money and property back. Just last spring 3 we helped the Mazzoni Health Center claim over $1,200 bucks and we alerted the Susan G. Komen organization to $435 dollars owed to them. Even CBS 3 employees were owed unclaimed cash.
It could be a utility deposit you never got back or a check that got lost in the mail. "It's coming from banks, insurance companies. If you have stock, securities that somehow get lost, it's coming from there," says David Gregor with the Delaware Department of Finance.
When the owner can't be found, the money ends up with the state treasury. Gregor says, "We have a lot of assets that we'd like to reunite with their true owners."
"In the past, when it was more of a paper driven process, people would get discouraged and they would kind of fall by the wayside but this allows them to do it all at one time," says Gregor, adding that with the new website, "They can search for their names, they can click the properties they believe belong to them and then they can file the claim in one seem less step."
