Brotherly Love: A Mother Sending Love And Hope

By Ukee Washington

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Almost three years ago, a Delaware Valley mother was going through one of the scariest times of her life. Her babies were born premature. Now, her children are doing well. That mom is reaching out to help other mothers like Kelly Horan.

When her triplets, Michael Jr., Tate, and Shae were born at 28 and a half weeks, Kelly knew they would be in the NICU at Bryn Mawr Hospital until they were strong enough to go to their home in Media.

"I did not really understand how emotionally challenging it would be to actually have to leave them there," Kelly said. She struggled with guilt and fear.

Keri Heickert of Montgomery County knew exactly what she was going through. Her twins, Delaney and Brooklyn, were born in November 2012 at 28 weeks. It left her with PTSD that she still struggles with.

"I call it zombie mode," Keri said. "I didn't know if I was coming or going, what day it was, if I ate. Did I sleep? Brush my teeth?"

Keri said, "I found a quote that said even in the darkest moments, love and hope are always possible."

One thing that lifted Keri's spirits was a care package left on her doorstep, "cute little clothes that were no larger than my hands. I actually got a smile on my face."

Keri realized she could help other moms. She started a non-profit called "Sending Love and Hope" delivering care packages to mothers of premature infants like Kelly. They include a journal, tiny hats, and onesies with a message: "made with love, sent with hope."

"It's amazing when you find somebody that has almost exactly gone through what you're going through," Kelly said.

Keri's twins turn 3 next month and are doing great. Keri estimates she has given care packages to about 30 mothers so far, letting them know they are not alone.

Keri also advocates for mothers with PTSD. Her Facebook page is www.facebook.com/sendingloveandhope
