Weekend Box Office Report: 'The Martian' Stands Alone At The Top

By Bill Wine

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Martian, director Ridley Scott's science fiction drama starring Matt Damon, remains stranded in first place, having earning an estimated $37-million during its second weekend of release.

The runner-up was the holdover animated sequel, Hotel Transylvania 2, which totaled $20-million.

Third place went to Pan, the debuting Peter Pan origin story with Hugh Jackman. It took in just under $16-million.

The Walk, director Robert Zemeckis' thriller, with Joseph Gordon-Levitt, expanded into wider release this weekend and took in just under $4-million, good for seventh place.

Overall, industry-wide totals were relatively robust for early October, led by The Martian, which has already passed the $100-million mark.
