Delco Students Raising Chickens, Selling Egg

By Kim Glovas

HAVERFORD, Pa. (CBS) - Some third grade students in Delaware County are learning the fundamentals of raising chickens and selling eggs.

The students at Friends School Haverford in Delaware County are operating and managing the "Little Egg Co-op."

Teacher Jennifer Nates says these are not mean-spirited hens:

"There's a head hen, and whenever there's some goodies, sometimes we'll put in freeze-dried meal worms. And she kind of establishes "I will get the most'."

James Langham says students check the coop every day and collect the eggs:

"We send out a flier, to everyone in the school, and basically if you want fresh eggs, you can order them from the school."

Nates says the eggs are sold for $3 a half dozen to school families. The money raised goes to Heifer International, a non-profit which works to lift families out of poverty through farming and other activities.
