West Chester Looks To Continue Surge Vs. Kutztown

By Matt Leon

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The West Chester Golden Rams will look to extend their winning streak to four straight games on Saturday when they welcome Kutztown to town in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East match-up.

West Chester's third straight win came this past Saturday on the road against Lock Haven, 33-9. The Golden Rams were tied with the now 0-5 Bald Eagles at the half, 9-9. But West Chester outscored Lock Haven 24-0 over the final 30 minutes to grab the win.

"Made a lot of mistakes in the first half," West Chester head coach Bill Zwaan tells KYW Newsradio. "The weather was a little bit of a factor. Our guys just weren't playing to the level we were expecting them to. Then they kind of got it together at halftime, we made a couple of adjustments, we played really good defense, really the whole game, but in particular in the second half we played great defense. Then, offensively, we finally got some things rolling a little bit."

Sophomore quarterback Pat Moriarty threw three touchdown passes against Lock Haven and the Golden Rams rushed for 164 yards in the.
win which improved West Chester to 3-2 here in 2015 (2-0 in PSAC East).

This match-up with Kutztown will be the midpoint of the season, and Zwaan talks about whether or not this team is about where he thought it would be.

"Pretty close," Zwaan says. "I thought it was going to take us a little while to get rolling. I still think we're making some mistakes that we shouldn't be making at this point in the season. But I think we're getting close to where I thought we would be."

Kutztown is also 3-2 this season (2-0 in PSAC East) and the Golden Bears are coached by a familiar face to local college football fans, former Delaware Valley University head coach Jim Clements. Last week they beat Millersville, 47-14.

"Really good offensive team," Zwaan says. "They have a good quarterback and three really sound receivers, they're actually better than sound, they're pretty good receivers. Pretty good running back. So offensively, a team that challenges you in a lot of different ways. Defensively, they are rebuilding their defense, they graduated a few guys, so they've give up some points, but they've also played well at times. They are very aggressive. They blitz, they give you some problems up front."

Last season, West Chester beat Kutztown 29-7.

Saturday's game at John A. Farrell Stadium will kickoff at 1:00pm
