PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – With its first-place finish at the box office, The Martian is sitting on top of the world.

The science fiction adventure starring Matt Damon earned an estimated $55-million on its debut weekend.

That put it well ahead of last weekend’s leader, Hotel Transylvania 2, which placed second with another $33-million.

Third went to another new attraction, Sicario, the action thriller with Emily Blunt. It took in $12-million.

Rounding out the top five were two holdovers: The Intern with $11-million and Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials with $8-million.

Overall, industry-wide totals were even higher than the strong showing on the counterpart weekend last year.
