Pa. Congressman Urges Members To Reconsider Government Shutdown Tactic
By Jim Melwert
HARRISBURG, Pa. (CBS) -- As some republican in Congress threaten to shut down the federal government in an effort to de-fund Planned Parenthood, a Pennsylvania Congressman is one of 11 freshmen republicans in the House who have signed a letter urging members to reconsider.
Congressman Ryan Costello says with deadline tactics like a government shutdown, it's easy to see why there's so much frustration with elected officials.
"I can tell you that people in my Congressional district do not view a government shutdown as a measure of success by any standard."
That's why Costello says he and 10-freshman republican congressmen and women signed a letter reminding colleagues of the cost of the 2013 shutdown:
"Everybody feels the government should remain open and I think that's a very common-sense practical thing that is lost on some in Washington who want to make every ideological debate and turn it into whether the government should stay open or not, and I don't think that's the way our government is supposed to work."
The deadline is September 30th.
