What's Cooking on 1060: Drink of the Summer?

By Hadas Kuznits

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- With summer officially ending next week, Philadelphia bartenders were surveyed about their biggest selling summer drinks.

You've heard of the song of the summer, so as the season shifts into Fall, the question is...what was the drink of the summer?

"It's probably a toss-up between our Bourbon and Bubbles," says Farmacia bartender Amy Campo, "which is an orange-y champagne and our watermelon mojito."

Meanwhile, Amada bartender Lenny Scrillo says bourbon seems to have been a trend this season.

"One of our mainstay cocktails is the Matador," he says. "It's a bourbon-based beverage and it's kind of like a sour, so it has citrus notes and elder flower and orange and lemon."

And at Fork...

"Definitely the Bourbon cocktail, says bartender Matt Burkhart. "Bourbon, fernet branca, mint syrup, grapefruit juice, really bright, citrus drink. It really reminds our guests of the prohibition-style classic old world cocktails that are really coming back."

But isn't bourbon more of a cold weather drink?

"You can definitely tweak it so that it is a summer drink," Burkhart says. "I think that the citrus aspect, the grapefruit, the mint, especially the fernet branca, which is a really nice, classic Milan-style bitter that we use, changes the components of a bourbon to make it really nice for summer."
