Bill To Eliminate Gender Designations On Single-Occupant Restrooms Introduced At Council Session

By Pat Loeb

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The line for the ladies-only bathroom could be history in a number of Philadelphia establishments, under a bill introduced in City Council today.

It was part of a flurry of bills introduced at council's first session after summer break.

A bill to eliminate gender designations on single-occupant bathrooms in the city was introduced by Councilman Mark Squilla, on behalf of the mayor's office of LGBT affairs.

Squilla says it would provide greater comfort for transgendered people and everyone else.

"Often times when we go into an establishment where there may be a single use bathroom and it may have a specific gender on it, and you may have a line outside one and not the other, they could easily use the other bathroom. So, I think it makes sense, I think it's practical and logical."

It would not apply to multi-stall bathrooms.

Other bills introduced include one to discourage street peddling by children, imposing a fine on the adults in charge of them and one to eliminate caps on city liability from water main breaks.
