Local Flyers Fans Starts Online Donation Campaign In Hopes Of Buying The Penguins

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – On Tuesday they'll make the ice at the Wells Fargo Center.

And in just 10 days, the Flyers open training camp.

So naturally fans are getting Flyered up.

One fan is so excited about the new hockey season, he is looking for donations to help him buy the Pittsburgh Penguins.

He has interesting ideas for the team and a backup plan.

Upon meeting Jeromy Spencer, two things become immediately obvious.

One, the guy is a Flyers fan.

"I'm as hardcore as they come," he said.

And two:

"I hate the Pittsburgh Penguins," he said.

Spencer also runs a blog with his four buddies called www.orangeandblackpack.com.

When word spread that the Penguins franchise was reportedly put on the market last week for $750 million, they knew exactly what they had to do.

"We thought to ourselves, we have to start a GoFundMe campaign to buy the Penguins," said Spencer.

In just three days, they've racked up over $1,300 in donations.

On their way to ownership, their plan is to destroy from within.

"Before we move them to Antarctica which is where Penguins belong, paint a Flyers logo in each parking space, maybe put a giant photo of Claude Giroux on the side of the building facing the highway of course, hiring traffic cones to play goaltender but then we thought why would we want to upgrade the team, you know what I mean," he said.

Despite the planning, there is a chance they will not meet their $750 million goal.

In fact there's no chance and as it turns out that's the best news of all.

"So we're going to give all the money, 100 percent of the money to Flyers Wives charities. Two of the charities that they support in particular that I'm particularly fond of is Snider Hockey and PAWS," said Spencer.

But all considering, owning the Penguins would be pretty tough, especially since he's training a Flyers rookie at home.

Spencer says that once these donations seem to hit their peak, he will set it up so they will funnel directly so that anyone who donates to the purchasing of the Penguins will actually be donating directly to those charities.
