South Jersey School Community Mourns Loss Of Student, Teacher Killed In Crashes

By Diana Rocco

PEMBERTON, N.J., (CBS) -- Faculty and students are mourning the loss of a fellow teacher and classmate at a Burlington County middle school.

Both died just days apart in unrelated car accidents.

The excitement of a new school year was met with heavy hearts for Pemberton's middle school community on the first day back.

"It was difficult I can't walk by Ms. McGinnis' classroom. I have to turn the other way. There were so many memories in that room," said Nastassia Pankins.

Students and friends consoling each other as they remember Janiya Castleberry. Days from starting eighth grade the 13-year-old died August 20 from injuries sustained in an accident. A week later, her seventh grade teacher Allison McGinnis was killed, struck by a vehicle while jogging.

"Allison's students viewed her not as their teacher but as a friend," said teacher Michael Martusus.

"But she inspired all of us," said Martusus.

"Those who were privileged to know her will never forget those sparkling eyes and that million dollar smile," said Janiya's teacher Marvin Hill.

The stands at Helen Fort Newcomb Middle School were filled with students and staff Thursday grieving the tragic loss of two members of their school family. They said a silent prayer and lit candles for Allison and Janiya whose parents sat side by side in the front row listening to friends recount their memories and holding back tears.  Students read a poem Allison wrote for her class.

"I say what I mean and mean what I say. I dream that one day I'll go dancing on the moon," said student Gia Colon.

Nastassia Pankins and Janiya were in Ms. McGinnis' class together.

"She's an angel in my heart now she will always be with me," said Nastassia.

Allison McGinnis was laid to rest Wednesday night on the eve of the new school year. Both her family and Janiya's family say their heart is full with the overwhelming support they've received, but this loss is still too great to bare.
