What's Cooking on 1060: Bud & Marilyn's Opening Soon In Midtown Village

By Hadas Kuznits

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --- Midtown village restaurateurs Marcie Turney and Valerie Safran open a new restaurant next week.

Bud & Marilyn's co-owner Marcie Turney says the newest restaurant at 13th and Locust is a tribute to her grandparents who for years owned a restaurant in Ripon, Wisconsin.

"I remember how he would smell, just like a kitchen -- and I'd be like ugh! And here I am, in a kitchen! And my grandmother, she was the boss.  She ran that show.  It's kind of just like Val," Turney says.

Kuznits: "Oh my god, you guys are Bud and Marilyn!"

Turney: "Yeah, it's pretty crazy!"

She says they'll be serving old favorites:

Turney: "Like beef stroganoff but re-imagined."

And there will be a hot-buttered bun section:

Turney: "We have a Nashville hot chicken bun, we've got a lobster bun."

This year, Turney and her partner Valerie Safran celebrate 13 years of business on 13th Street, which started with Open House.

"Yeah, we opened that in 2002," Turney says. "After Open House, I wanted a restaurant.  That was our first thing, Lolita, and it was BYOT (tequila) back then.  That restaurant is 12 years old!  Oh my gosh."

Then there was Grocery and Bindi. "Which was our Indian restaurant," Turney says. "Bindi has now become Jamonera, our Spanish restaurant."

Eventually they took over Robbin's bookstore, "And we opened Barbuzzo our Mediterranean restaurant and Verde is our women's store," she says.

Then Little Nona's.  When Bud and Marilyn's opens next Wednesday (August 26th) Turney and Safran will have about 200 employees.

Kuznits: "And everyone depends on you!"

Turney: "And I depend on them.  It's a two way street."
