Not Jordan, Not James, Shaq Says Julius Erving Is The Greatest Ever

By Ray Boyd

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Basketball fans in Philadelphia know of the greatness of Julius Erving. However, his name rarely pops up in broad discussions about the greatest basketball player ever.

We've reached a time where the only names that typically pop up are the consensus G.O.A.T Michael Jordan, LeBron James, Wilt Chamberlain, Bill Russell and Kobe Bryant.

For the sake of discussion, it's really only between Jordan and James at this point.

Shaquille O'Neal, certainly a player in the discussion for greatest big man of all-time, decided to weigh in on the debate of whether or not Jordan could beat James one-on-one if the two squared off in their prime.

O'Neal sided with Jordan when it comes to a game of one-one-one, but he didn't pick Jordan as the greatest. In fact, he didn't pick James either.

O'Neal said that in his mind, Julius Erving was the greatest to ever play the game.

"I've seen young Mike and young LeBron and I must say Dr. J is still my favorite player," O'Neal said while on a promotional visit to Hong Kong on Tuesday. "A lot of people today don't even mention his name but to me I still think he was the best. But these are questions that we'll never know the answer to."
