Police Announce Arrest In Shooting Of 10-Year-Old In Delaware
WILMINGTON, Del. (CBS) -- Police have announced an arrest in connection with a shooting that left a 10-year-old child injured in Wilmington, Delaware early Tuesday morning.
Officers responded to the scene on the 700 block of Townsend Place in Wilmington just before 2 a.m.
Upon arrival, police say they found a 10-year-old suffering from a gunshot wound to the head.
Authorities say the young victim was treated at the scene by paramedics and rushed to the A.I. Dupont Children's Hospital, where he is currently listed in critical but stable condition.
"We just want you to know that we love him and that he was a very loving child and that whoever did this we want justice for because this should never have happened," said a family member.
"I don't know very much other than this is a constant, constant. It just tears at your heart and you feel hopeless, you feel helpless," said Wilmington City Councilwoman Hanifa Shabazz.
Officers with flashlights walked in and out of homes looking for evidence, and a crime scene unit dusted for prints.
"The little boy is going to pull because we are praying for that. Our focus right now is on that baby," said Minister Margaret Guy.
"We're all neighbors and we must stand together to stamp out this violence and shootings and murder that's taking place in our community," said Herman Holloway, Jr.
"He's really competitive, so I believe even in fighting for his life, he's going to compete," said Minister Perry Davis.
Detectives from the Criminal Investigative Division investigated this incident and Tuesday afternoon announced the arrest of an individual in regards to this incident.
Police say 24-year-old Jaleel Goldsborough was taken into custody and charged with Possession of a Firearm by a Person Prohibited Causing Injury or Death to Another Person.
Police say details of the incident are still being investigated.
