Weekend Box Office Report: 'Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation' Remains On Top

By Bill Wine

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- It was a sequel topping a reboot at the box office over the weekend.

On its second weekend, the fifth installment in the Mission: Impossible franchise, Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, earned an estimated $29-million to repeat as the first-place attraction.

That put it ahead of the debuting remake, Fantastic Four, the comic book-inspired superhero fantasy that took in $26-million as the runner-up.

The new suspense thriller, The Gift, with Jason Bateman, was third with $12-million.

The new musical Meryl Streep vehicle, Ricki and the Flash, placed seventh with $7-million.

And the British animated comedy, Shaun the Sheep Movie, totaled $4-million, good for eleventh place.

Overall, industry-wide totals were significantly below those of the counterpart weekends in each of the last two years.
