Service Dog Saves The Day And Her Owner

By Robin Culverwell

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A service dog has gone above and beyond the call of duty to save her owner during a house fire. This isn't the first time the dog, "Yolanda" has come to the rescue.

Thursday, the 5-year-old service dog, a yellow Lab, called the fire department by pushing a button on the phone then pulled her owner from the burning home.

Both owner and dog are okay, but are staying in a Red Cross Shelter, so in steps Red Paw Emergency Relief Team - which helps animals the same way the Red Cross helps people.

The organization has brought Yolanda food, toys, bowls, and a bed.

Red Paw Founder Jen Leary says Yolanda has been a lifesaver once before, when her owner fell:

"Last year or a couple of years ago, the owner had knocked herself out." said Leary. "Yolanda hit the medical alert key the owner wears around her neck and called for help when her owner was unconscious."

Leary says you can see the pride on Yolanda's face, sitting next to her owner and knowing she is safe.
