KYW Flashback: Governor McGreevey Shocks Everyone
TRENTON, N.J. (CBS) - Jim McGreevey was a political star. His turf was New Jersey and his future was bright.
Then, eleven years ago this week, Governor McGreevey stunned his supporters, his Democratic party, the state legislature and his wife. He resigned as the state's chief executive and announced he was "a gay American."
McGreevey's unravelling began when he hired an Israeli friend and companion as Homeland Security adviser, although the friend had no qualifications for the post. Then there were sexual harassment allegations. And finally, the televised revelation.
But in his last year as governor, McGreevey signed off on a landmark same-sex partnership bill for the Garden State.
