Hotel Rooms Still Available For Pope's Visit To Philadelphia

By Pat Toddy

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- In just eight weeks, Pope Francis will be celebrating mass with a million plus people on the Ben Franklin Parkway. If you want to stay in Philadelphia for the historic event, there's still room at the inn.

On a recent trip to Ecuador, the pope took selfies with his fans who have given him rock star status. We can't promise the same reward here, but if you stay in Philadelphia, there is definitely a chance of catching a glimpse of the Holy Father or hearing his message of love, in-person.

Hotel rooms are still available says Ed Grose, Executive Director of the Philadelphia Hotel Association, who recommends staying from Thursday, September 24 through Monday, September 28.

"That way they are in the city, and will not have to clear through security on Saturday," Grose says, "they'll already be in the city, and it will be much easier for them."

Hotel prices are higher than usual for the papal visit to the United States. Grose could not give specifics, but stresses the historical impact of the event.

"Sure, you're going to pay a little bit more for rooms," he says, "but I think for a once-in-a generation event like the papal visit, it's well worth it."

Hotels are expected to sell out soon. Grose suggests checking hotel websites for the best rate.
