Official: Phillies Trade Cole Hamels

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Philadelphia Phillies star pitcher Cole Hamels has been traded to the Texas Rangers, announced on Friday. Hamels will address the media at 2:00 p.m.

The Phillies sent Hamels, along with reliever Jake Diekman and cash, to the Rangers for veteran pitcher Matt Harrison and five prospects---RHP Alec Asher, RHP Jerad Eickhoff, OF Nick Williams, C Jorge Alfaro and RHP Jake Thompson.

Of the five minor league players, three – Williams, Alfaro and Thompson – are ranked in the Baseball Prospectus Top 50 and MLB.com's Top 100 and one – Thompson – is ranked in Baseball America's Top 50.

Hamels, 31, spent nine and a half seasons in Philadelphia solidifying himself as one of baseball's most consistently dominant pitchers. Since 2011, Hamels ranks second in Wins Above Replacement only to Clayton Kershaw and he's pitched at least 200 innings in five straight seasons (and six out of seven).

Hamels is 114-90 in his career with a 3.30 ERA with 1,844 strikeouts and just 492 walks in 1,930 innings pitched. This season, Hamels is 6-7 with a 3.64 ERA, coming off his first-career no-hitter at the Chicago Cubs on July 25th.

Hamels, the No. 17 overall pick in the 2002 draft of the Phillies, was homegrown working his way up this Phillies' minor league system, debuting on May 12th, 2006. The San Diego, California native leaves Philadelphia as a three-time all-star, a four-time top-10 Cy Young finisher, a 2008 NLCS MVP, and a 2008 World Series MVP.

Hamels ranks sixth in Phillies history in wins, ERA and innings pitched, fourth in starts, and third in strikeouts, behind only Hall of Famers Steve Carlton and Robin Roberts.
