Wearing Contact Lenses

KYW Medical Reports Sponsored By Independence Blue Cross

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Contact lenses bring clear vision to 30 million Americans. Compared to glasses, they often offer sharper focus, better peripheral vision for driving, and even improved self-esteem in kids and preteens. But easy access has led many people not to take them seriously.

Fortunately there have been advances in the types of contacts made available. Gas permeable lenses are very popular because they allow oxygen to reach the eye, they're typically more comfortable than harder lenses. New materials, such as silicone hydrogels, are more breathable than ever. Some people choose rigid gas permeable lenses. These are good for people with allergies because the RGP's slick surface repels deposits of protein and other compounds. RGPs can also end up costing less as they last longer and are less prone to tearing.

It is important to get eye exams on a regular basis and perhaps the most important step is hygiene: hand washing and cleaning of the lenses.
