Hiring A Wedding Videographer

By Amy E. Feldman

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A Brooklyn couple sued their videographer last year for the emotional distress he caused them.

On the day of the wedding, the videographer showed up with only a fraction of the equipment called for by the contract. When the video was delivered, it contained a laugh track and sitcom clapping effects. Which was probably hilarious. You know, not to the bride on her big day who described it as the worst thing in the world. (She probably hasn't had ebola. Which is not to belittle her feelings about what was supposed to capture one of the best and most important days of her life.)

The couple has sued for a return of the fee they paid and punitive damages.

How do you avoid that comedy of errors?

First, ask for references for people who have worked with the company before, and do independent research to see if complaints have been logged. Be very specific in the contract about the equipment to be brought, how long the videographer will be in attendance, what you want the video to capture.

And, ask for installment payments so that you're not on the hook until you've seen the finished product and decide on your own if the video is applause-worthy.
