Weekend Box Office Report: 'Ant-Man' Has Big Debut
By Bill Wine
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The little superhero, Ant-Man, was big at the box office.
The Marvel Comics-inspired crime-fighter saga starring Paul Rudd and Michael Douglas earned an estimated $58-million on its weekend debut to take over first place.
That toppled last weekend's leader – the animated blockbuster, Minions – into the second spot. It took in another $50-million as it passed the $200-million mark.
In third was the weekend's other new major mainstream release, Trainwreck, from director Judd Apatow, with Amy Schumer and Bill Hader. It opened to a $30-million take.
And rounding out the top five were holdovers Inside Out and Jurassic World with $12-million and $11-million, respectively.
Overall, industry-wide totals were well above those of a year ago.
