Local Residents Cope With Philly Heat Wave

By Kim Glovas

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- An excessive heat warning is in effect until 8 p.m. Monday night, but that isn't keeping people from going about their usual routines.

Trying to find a shady spot to wait for the bus is not just a challenge in weather like this, it's a necessity.

"I tell you I try to stay under little trees, waiting for the bus, and I start to stay home with my air conditioner on," says a Philadelphia commuter trying to beat the heat."

She also says there would be no cooked meals during the heat wave.

"Oh, I don't cook! It's too hot! I don't cook and I hate the microwave, but I use the microwave sometimes."

Many people are staying close to an air conditioner, whether it's at home, work or at a mall or library. Kelly Earl was running out of his air-conditioned office to get a bite to eat Monday afternoon, and says it's all relative.

"The stifling weather, as long as you stay near a pool and stay in some air conditioning, you should be fantastic," says Earl. "But right now as long as I don't see any ice on the ground and I don't have to shovel anything, this is great weather."

Another thing to consider is your vehicle. Jim Lardear of Triple-A Mid-Atlantic says you should prepare your vehicle for the summer, just like you do in the winter.

"One of the most important things to remember is that the heat can zap the life from your car battery," Lardear says. "Just like it will in the cold weather."

He also says keep your coolant filled and tires properly inflated because they are coming in contact with those hot roadways.
