KYW Flashback: The Death Of Former Mayor Frank Rizzo
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- "We have this just in. Former mayor and mayoral candidate Frank Rizzo has died."
1991, Frank Rizzo was brought down by his own heart. Son of immigrants, beat cop, top cop and then Mayor of Philadelphia, he was rarely viewed without controversy.
He was the tough cop, togged out in black tie with a nightstick in his cummerbund or a big protective bear with an arm around Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir on Walnut Street where he told a KYW reporter, " If terrorists are going to get her, they going to have to get me first."
Like him or not, there was never a doubt about where he stood.
