Township Officials Investigating Possible Software Issue Following High Water Bills

By David Spunt

MONROE TOWNSHIP, N.J., (CBS) -- Angry residents in Monroe Township, Gloucester County tell Eyewitness News they want answers after discovering record high water bills from the month of May.

Residents just received the May bill earlier this month. Municipal Utilities Authority officials with the township admit the new July 1st rates were accidently added into the May bill. Officials promise to make changes, but neighbors believe there is more to the story.

"There's something funny going on here," one resident shouted.

Some neighbors believe the powerful storms a few weeks ago affected the software connected to the water meters. Board members admitted it's possible and promised a complete investigation. Some residents saw bills as high as $371 for May. One man said his bill indicated he used 43,000 gallons of water for the month.

"We'd be happy to sit and talk to you about your individual situations. That's the way we operate. We are customer friendly," MMUA Executive Director Jerry Moore said to concerned residents at Wednesday's public meeting.

Neighbors continued to push and ask for clarification about the high bills.

"I turn the water off in the shower. I fill that dishwasher to the brim. I don't know how else i can cut back my usage," resident Kelly Evans said.

Board member told homeowners they will have staff members check meters and they will investigation a possible software issue.

"We just feel like we're being ripped off somehow and it's not fair," resident Karen Uzdavines said.
