Weekend Box Office Report: 'Minions' Fight Off Competition In Weekend Debut

By Bill Wine

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Minions held dominion at the box office over the weekend, to the tune of an estimated $115-million. The prequel to and spin-off of the Despicable Me 'toons' had the second biggest opening in animated-movie history, topped only by Shrek the Third.

Second and third place were claimed by the two movies that have dominated multiplex traffic the last couple weekends. The Jurassic Park sequel, Jurassic World, was second with $18-million, while another animated comedy, Inside Out, was third with $17-million.

Two other debuting attractions also cracked the top ten. The horror thriller, The Gallows, finished fifth with $10-million, while the science fiction thriller, Self/Less, took in $5-million, good for eighth place.

Overall, mostly because of Minions, industry-wide totals were well ahead of those on the counterpart weekend last year.
