Darren Daulton Says He Would 'Not Allow' Lazy Play

By Andrew Porter

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Trailing the Giants 4-0 in the top of the seventh inning with two outs of Sunday's series finale, Phillies veteran first baseman Ryan Howard hit a rather towering routine pop-up toward shortstop Brandon Crawford.

Usually, that ball is caught, but yesterday it wasn't. Maikel Franco, who lazily jogged from first base on the hit, luckily scored, while Howard only made it to first base.

"I think he [Howard] could have walked to second base," said Phillies radio analyst Larry Andersen after the play.

Former Phillies catcher Darren Daulton, says he would have had some words for Howard.

"I would," Daulton said Monday on the 94WIP Morning Show, when asked if he would have talked to Howard about not running out the pop-up.

"If I'm a younger player, but should be a leader---which we're talking about---I would not allow that. Right now in Philadelphia, I would not---if there's one guy that's not running the bases or doing the things that he's supposed to do to help us, than I would [say something].

Now, back in the day, especially in '93 we had some crazy people," Daulton continued. "But every now and then I would bark."

For the Phillies, who enter the all-star break after their worst first half in franchise history (29-62), their leaders like Chase Utley and the aforementioned Howard are no longer producing on-the-field.

Daulton says, even so, they should still be teaching the younger guys.

"From a players stand point, some of these guys are a lot older," Daulton said. "I would think they would be leading this team.

Even a guy like Utley, who is currently on the disabled list and hitting .179 this season?

"I would," Daulton said. "I would."
