Wolf Signs Law Clarifying Background Check Requirements

By Tony Romeo

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Governor Wolf has signed into law a bill intended to clarify changes to Pennsylvania's Child Protective Services Law, made in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky scandal.

The Child Protective Services Law was changed to require background checks for employees and volunteers who are directly involved with children. It requires State Police and Department of Human Services background checks.

The intent of the bill now signed by the governor is to more clearly define who is subject to background checks and where possible, make the requirements less burdensome. The new law also pushes back the date when new volunteers must begin getting background checks until August 25th.

Last month, Governor Wolf announced that as of July 25th, the $10 background check fees for volunteers would be waived and the fees for employees would be reduced to $8 dollars.

FBI clearances are still required of volunteers and employees who have not lived in Pennsylvania continuously for ten years.
