TICONDEROGA, N.Y. (CBS) -- There is a place of stunning beauty within a day's drive of the Delaware Valley that is picture-perfect for a long Fourth of July weekend.
Imagine a land so rugged and breathtakingly majestic that, even today, the waterways provide the clearest path through the dense forest.
It's Fort Ticonderoga, in the Adirondack Mountains of New York, where this historic fortification guards the portage between Lake Champlain and Lake George.

"It was designed to defend this land, which was known as 'the key to the continent,' " says Beth Hill, who heads the association that keeps alive the history, the structures, the landscaping, and the beauty of Fort Ticonderoga.
"You have the beautiful Adirondack Mountains, the Green Mountains, Lake Champlain, Lake George -- two thousand acres of pristine landscape," she notes.
And during the July 4th holiday period, you can experience cannon salutes, musketry and music in and around Fort Ticonderoga. And the kids get to drill with the reëenactors (below)!
