Study: High-Heel Related Injuries On The Rise Among Young Women

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Weddings, proms, graduations, there are many reasons females may throw on a pair of high-heels to dress up for a special occasion. However, a new study found in The Journal of Foot and Ankle Surgery suggests high-heel-related injuries have nearly doubled in recent years.

Researchers say they collected data from the Consumer Product Safety Commission's National Electronic Injury Surveillance System to conduct their study.

According to the data, an estimated 123,355 high-heel-related injuries were treated in emergency departments in the United States from 2002-2012.

Researchers say the injury-rate was highest among young women, with the highest rates observed for females ages 20-29 and 30 to 39-years-old.

Most women suffered sprain and strain injuries to their foot and ankle, the study found.

Researchers conclude, "Although high heels might be stylish, from a health standpoint, it could be worthwhile for females and those interested in wearing high heels to understand the risks of wearing high-heeled shoes and the potential harm that precarious activities in high-heeled shoes can cause."
