Easily Grow Blueberries

By Phran Novelli

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Blueberries! I keep seeing blueberry plants for sale – even right outside some supermarkets – that are full of berries already, growing and getting ready to turn blue.

So, if you haven't planted blueberries yet, what are you waiting for?

You can check your soil to see if you need to add anything to make it more acidic or improve drainage, but otherwise, blueberries are quite easy to grow.

Find details about preparing a place to plant them at NJAES.Rutgers.edu or PSU.edu.

You can even grow blueberries in a large pot on a deck or patio close to your kitchen…so you can wander out in the morning and pick a few fresh berries for your cereal.

I call these natives our most 'patriotic plants'! They bring you white flowers in spring, blueberries in summer and ruby red foliage in the fall as you see in the photo here.

So plant one, two or a few blueberry bushes now and you could be enjoying your first harvest by the 4th of July.
