A New Procedure May Help You Say Goodbye To Reading Glasses

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- If you're sick of dealing with reading glasses, a new procedure could let you throw them away.
The FDA has approved the KAMRA inlay procedure to treat presbyopia, the loss of near vision affecting many of us, especially as we age.
Dr. Mark Blecher, a surgeon at Wills Eye Hospital, says a tiny black plastic disc with a pinpoint hole is placed in a pocket in the cornea in only one eye and the brain helps do the work.
"The brain is able to work with multiple images we've found," said Blecher. "You might think you'd be confused with what's in focus...very quickly the brain picks the image it needs at that moment for what it's doing; it doesn't become an issue."
He says if the patient doesn't like the results, the surgeon can remove the inlay and the patient can return to their reading glasses.
