Burger Brawl Sizzles In South Philly, Raises Money For City Schools

By Kristen Johanson

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - It certainly felt like summer Sunday, so what better way to enjoy the day than grilling out? That's exactly what they did in South Philadelphia for the annual Burger Brawl.

Area chefs dished out their best burger to benefit literacy and technology programs for Philly public schools. It all started when founder Rob Wasserman wanted to raise money for his son's school.

"After building the first computer lab, we said 'listen, we have something here, people are interested here in helping out with the community and also enjoy themselves with eating burgers'," he says.

The money will go to building a hybrid tech library this year at two elementary schools.

"Any kind of charity we can get involved with, we try to do it," says participant and owner of Nick's Roast Beef in Old City, Joe Schultice.

Shultice says it took about eight hours to prepare his burger:

"Our burger is a combination of ground bacon and ground beef, topped with an applewood smoked bacon, and then an apple and onion jam on top with cheddar cheese."

Marlo Dilks of P'unk Burger in Passyunk agrees this is a delicious way to give back, and brought her own unique creation to the table:

"It's a beef burger topped black pepper corn bacon, with Gouda cheese, an onion ring and our house signature sauce, which is a steak sauce."

Gabrielle and her husband drove all the way from Princeton, New Jersey to satisfy their craving and to help the cause:

"I am a big foodie, but I am also a teacher at a public school, and my husband here told me that it is actually for a school here in Philadelphia, and it started because of lap top fundraiser, and I thought that was a really good cause."

The event raised more than $200,000 dollars.

The winner for 'People's Choice' was Blue Duck, and for judge's choice, the winner was Village Whiskey.
