Charity Basketball Tournament Held To Benefit Children Of Fallen Philly Officer

By Dan Wing

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Dozens of people made their way out to Chestnut Hill College Saturday to watch the Sgt. Robert Wilson III Memorial Basketball tournament. Sgt. Wilson was killed while trying to stop a robbery at a video game store in North Philadelphia on March 5th.

The tournament pitted a number of different local law enforcement agencies against each other in 4-on-4 basketball games. Philadelphia Deputy Sheriff Mike Terry put the tournament together.

"We can have a nice time, honor him, and at the same time raise proceeds for his children for the children's trust fund as well as their education and stuff like that," he says.

Terry says Sgt. Wilson's children may have lost their father, but they gained new ones in the form of Wilson's former colleagues:

"We'll be there for them. Taking them to games, Father's Day, stuff like that."

Sheriff Jewel Williams was also on hand, and honored his Deputy for organizing what he called an "awesome program:"

"And it just shows the city of Philadelphia real brotherly love."

In addition to the price of admission, the tournament also sold shirts to help raise money to benefit Sgt. Wilson's children.
