Male Makeup Market Not Regulated By FDA

By Amy E. Feldman

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The male cosmetic market has increased by over 70 percent globally in the last 6 years, reaching $3 billion in the US alone. And you'll understand how much men's attitudes on cosmetics has changed when I tell you that the market includes shampoos and conditioners, skin care products and moisturizers, and colognes and body sprays - to which you'll say: oh, yeah, well.

I know, calling it grooming sounds totally acceptable in a way that calling it primping doesn't. You may be a bit more uncomfortable to learn that in Korea, men's products include a camouflage palette, or as we call it, cover-up and foundation. Be aware, it's a slippery silicone slope.

So, you guys need to know that what you are using are actually cosmetics, which The Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act) defines as "articles intended to be rubbed, poured, sprinkled, or sprayed on, introduced into, or otherwise applied to the human body...for cleansing, beautifying, promoting attractiveness, or altering the appearance" Sound familiar?

Also you need to know that cosmetics don't require FDA approval before they go on the market, so it will be incumbent upon you to recognize that you should do some research before slathering anything onto your face or body that could cause breakouts or otherwise harm your pretty face.
